Thanks for visiting. I’m a product designer, creative director and entrepreneur working in LA and Silicon Valley. I’ve been leading design teams at Apple and Netflix over the last 2 years and have recently returned to the start-up world. Before working at Apple, I founded a digital agency called 1K Studios. At 1K, I helped entertainment and tech companies market and distribute movies, TV shows, music, books and games via digital platforms. Product Creative @ Netflix

Most recently, I lead a team of ~70 designers, animators and producers who collectively make up the Netflix Product Creative Team.  The group is part of Netflix’s UX Design Organization.  The Product Creative Team creates a visual identity (think artwork, images, trailers etc.) for each new show on Netflix.  Beyond branding these shows, these visual identities have a very large impact on motivating user behavior, both good (content discovery and streaming) and bad (confusion, lack of interest and dropped sessions).  As such, the Product Creative team partners heavily with analysts, engineers and algorithm designers to test, optimize and refine imagery to yield optimal audience connection. This fusion of traditional fine art and data science made Product Creative an incredibly interesting an fun place to work.

Video Design @ Apple

At Apple, I managed a team of Human Interface Designers primarily working on video apps.  My main focus was the Clips app, a casual video editor that was designed as a more phone-friendly descendant of iMovie.  I also worked on Final Cut Pro, iMovie and Motion as well as Memories, an automatic personal movie creation feature in the Photos app. Before joining the Video Team, I worked on several feature enhancements for Pages, Keynote and Numbers projects. Video, in its many forms, has become the preferred means of communication and experience sharing for a new generation. It’s an exciting and dynamic field to work in. I enjoyed having the opportunity to shape the future of video with the uniquely talented people at Apple.

Prior to joining Apple, I was the CEO and Chief Creative at 1K, a digital agency I founded in Los Angeles in 1999 along with partner Jason Won. At 1K, I helped entertainment and technology companies create and market consumer media products. I left 1K after selling the company in 2013. 1K now operates as ONE+K, a division of Space 150 Advertising. During my time there, I lead four specialized teams:

Development – web, mobile applications
Design – interaction, motion, animation
Marketing – branding, digital marketing, social media
Content – documentary & EPK, trailers

 

1K started in a tiny bungalow in Hollywood and grew to 100+ people…

Art, Science and Clients

1K worked with all of the 7 major studios in Hollywood, as well as clients like HBO and Penguin Publishing in New York. In many case we acted as a conduit between media companies and technology partners – like Netflix, Apple, Microsoft and Sony – who deliver this media to audiences. We helped our clients leverage emerging technologies and platforms to entertain and engage audiences in new ways. Among our most influential clients was Steve Jobs, who sought out 1K to create engaging user experiences for Apple’s software products. Our work with Apple over the years was a great honor and a lot of fun. It directly influenced my path to joining Apple in 2015.

eCommerce Startup

In between running 1K and working at Apple, I worked with Clotheshores.us, a company that sells pre-owned women’s apparel, to create and launch their online business. I built the company’s eCommerce team, office, online store and photo studio, then integrated the online store with brick and mortar back-end systems. To promote products and build audience, I implemented a number of engagement strategies through eMail, SEM and Social Media Marketing. Though I had previously worked on digital strategy for clients, building my own e-commerece business from the ground up gave me a much deeper understanding of how people, products and brands actually come together online.
